Gombe Stream National Park enjoys a warm tropical climate year-round, influenced by its location along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The dry season from June to October offers the best conditions for chimpanzee trekking and forest hiking, while the rainy season from November to May transforms the park into a lush rainforest, creating outstanding scenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities.

Dry Season – June to October (Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking)

The dry season offers the most comfortable conditions for exploring Gombe Stream National Park. Forest trails are drier, humidity is lower, and chimpanzees are generally easier to locate, making this the most rewarding time for trekking.

  • June: The dry season begins, with daytime temperatures averaging around 26°C (79°F). Trails become firmer, trekking conditions improve, and forest walks are more comfortable.
  • July to September: These are the best months to visit. Temperatures range between 24–27°C (75–81°F), rainfall is minimal, and chimpanzee trekking is at its peak. Clear skies also provide excellent views across Lake Tanganyika.
  • October: Warm temperatures of around 28°C (82°F) continue before the short rains arrive. Wildlife viewing remains excellent, while bird activity gradually increases as the season changes.
Wet Season – November to May (Lush Rainforest & Exceptional Birdwatching)

The wet season transforms Gombe Stream National Park into a vibrant tropical rainforest. Although trekking trails can be muddier, the forest is at its most scenic, waterfalls flow strongly, and birdwatching reaches its peak with the arrival of migratory species.

  • November & December: The short rains refresh the forest, bringing lush vegetation and excellent bird activity. Temperatures average around 27°C (81°F), while chimpanzee trekking remains rewarding despite occasional showers.
  • January & February: Rainfall becomes lighter, and temperatures remain around 27–28°C (81–82°F). These months offer a good balance of comfortable trekking, beautiful scenery, and outstanding birdwatching.
  • March to May: This is the main rainy season, with daytime temperatures averaging 26–27°C (79–81°F). Trails can become muddy and more challenging, but the rainforest is at its greenest, waterfalls are at their most spectacular, and visitor numbers are at their lowest, creating a peaceful wilderness experience.

Upon arrival in Kigoma, most lodges and tour operators arrange a 1–2 hour scenic boat transfer to the park, offering spectacular views of Lake Tanganyika and the surrounding mountains.

Travelers who prefer to travel by road can drive to Kigoma from other parts of Tanzania, then continue to Gombe by boat. Although reaching the park requires a combination of air or road travel and a lake transfer, the journey itself is one of the highlights of visiting this remote and unspoiled wilderness.

Gombe Stream National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote safari destinations. Although reaching the park requires a combination of flight and a scenic boat transfer across Lake Tanganyika, the journey is an unforgettable part of the experience.
