Mafia Island’s tropical climate makes it a year-round destination. The dry season is perfect for diving, snorkelling, and beach holidays, while the wetter months offer lush landscapes, warm seas, and unforgettable whale shark encounters.
The dry season offers the most comfortable weather for beach holidays, scuba diving, snorkelling, and other outdoor activities across Mafia Island.
- June, July & August: Daytime temperatures average around 27°C (81°F) with cooler evenings. Humidity is lower, skies are generally clear, and sea conditions are excellent for diving, snorkelling, and marine excursions.
- September & October: Temperatures gradually rise to around 30°C (86°F) while rainfall remains minimal. Calm seas, excellent underwater visibility, and warm sunshine make this one of the best times to visit Mafia Island before the whale shark season begins.
The wet season brings lush tropical scenery, warmer temperatures, fewer visitors, and the unforgettable whale shark season, making it an excellent time for marine wildlife experiences.
- November & December: Warm temperatures average 29–31°C (84–88°F) with occasional short tropical showers. This marks the beginning of the whale shark season, while diving and snorkelling conditions remain excellent.
- January & February: Expect hot, sunny days interrupted by brief showers. Calm seas and outstanding marine life make this one of the best months for whale shark encounters, scuba diving, and beach holidays.
- March, April & May: These are the long rains, bringing heavier but often intermittent rainfall and lush green landscapes. Although some marine activities may depend on sea conditions, diving, cultural tours, and nature experiences continue, with fewer tourists and a quieter atmosphere.
