Mikumi’s grassy plains are home to zebra, wildebeest, impala, and buffalo, with lions often seen hunting them. Giraffes browse acacia trees near the Mkata River, where elephants also roam. The park is known for its abundant yellow baboons. While rhinos vanished in the 1990s, plans are underway to reintroduce them, enhancing Mikumi’s wildlife diversity.

With over 400 bird species, Mikumi is a birdwatcher’s haven. From November to April, vibrant residents like the yellow-throated longclaw and bateleur share the skies with Palearctic migrants. The hippo pool and Mwanambogo Dam offer prime viewing for water birds such as the African fish eagle, African spoonbill, and hamerkop. In contrast, African openbills can often be spotted along the Mkata River.

Mikumi National Park experiences a warm to hot and humid climate year-round, with minimal temperature fluctuations. The hottest months are October to March, while June to August brings cooler temperatures. The Wet season spans November to May, with brief, almost daily afternoon rains. The Dry season, from June to October, offers drier, cooler conditions.

Dry Season – Dry Season – June to October

Afternoon temperatures hover around 28°C (82°F), with clear, bright days.

  • June to September: Rain is almost non-existent, and these are the coolest months, with nighttime lows around 17°C (63°F).
  • October: The rains may start late in the month, but until then, expect hot, dry days with rising humidity.
Wet Season – Wet Season–November to May

The Wet season is hot and humid, with afternoon temperatures around 31°C (88°F) and nights cooling to 20°C (68°F).

  • November & December: The Wet season begins unpredictably, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms. It’s rare for rain to last all day.
  • January & February: Rain becomes more frequent, but all-day downpours are uncommon. Afternoon showers are the norm.
  • March, April & May: April is the height of the Wet season, bringing regular rain and cloud cover, though rarely all day. Daytime highs average 30°C (86°F), with nights around 20°C (68°F).

Safaris to Mikumi typically begin in Dar es Salaam, with entry through Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) in Zanzibar. From there, ground transfers or domestic flights can be arranged.

 

Flights to Mikumi’s airstrips are available from Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve), Ruaha National Park, Dar es Salaam, or Zanzibar. Charter flights may also be possible from parks in Tanzania’s Northern circuit.

 

By road, Mikumi is about a 6-hour drive from Dar es Salaam (300km/186 mi to the east) and is a favoured weekend escape for locals. Many travellers stop at Mikumi on their way to Ruaha National Park, with the drive from Ruaha covering roughly 320km/200 mi and also taking about 6 hours.

 

For those travelling from Arusha, Mikumi lies 795km/494 mi to the south.
