Mkomazi National Park has a warm, semi-arid climate with two distinct seasons. The dry season (June to October) offers excellent wildlife viewing, while the wet season (November to May) transforms the park into a lush landscape ideal for birdwatching and scenic photography.
The dry season is the best time to visit Mkomazi National Park. Vegetation becomes sparse, improving wildlife visibility as animals gather around permanent water sources. Clear skies, low humidity and pleasant temperatures also make this the ideal season for game drives and photography.
June, July & August: Daytime temperatures average 25–28°C (77–82°F) with cool mornings and evenings. Wildlife sightings steadily improve as water becomes scarcer.
September & October: Temperatures rise to around 30–33°C (86–91°F). This is one of the best periods to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, oryx, elands, lesser kudus, African wild dogs and black rhinos within the protected sanctuary.
During the wet season, Mkomazi becomes green and vibrant as seasonal rains replenish the landscape. This is the best time for birdwatching, with both resident and migratory species present. Wildlife remains abundant but is more dispersed due to the widespread availability of water.
November to February: Warm temperatures of 27–31°C (81–88°F) combine with occasional showers, creating beautiful scenery and excellent birdlife.
March to May: These are the wettest months, bringing heavier rainfall and greener landscapes. Some tracks may become muddy after prolonged rain, but the park is particularly rewarding for bird enthusiasts, photographers and visitors seeking fewer crowds.

Mkomazi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible national parks, conveniently located in northeastern Tanzania between Moshi and Tanga, along the main highway connecting Tanzania and Kenya. Visitors can easily reach the park by road from Arusha, Moshi, Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Tanga, making it an ideal destination for day trips, short safaris and longer northern Tanzania itineraries. The park has several entrance gates, including Zange Gate (the main entrance), Njiro Gate, Umba Gate and Kivingo Gate, allowing access from different parts of the region.

Scheduled domestic flights operate daily to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Mwanza and other major destinations. From JRO, Mkomazi National Park is approximately a 2 to 2.5-hour drive to Zange Gate. Visitors can also fly into Arusha Airport (ARK) for convenient access by road.

Mkomazi National Park is a safe and peaceful safari destination, welcoming visitors from around the world throughout the year. Guided safaris are led by experienced professional guides familiar with the park’s terrain, wildlife, and regulations, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. As with any destination, travellers should take normal precautions with personal belongings while travelling to and from the park.
Mkomazi National Park is located in a malaria-risk area, and visitors are encouraged to consult their doctor or travel clinic before travelling to Tanzania. Routine vaccinations should be up to date, while antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your travel plans. Using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long-sleeved clothing in the evenings and sleeping under mosquito nets where provided are effective ways to reduce mosquito bites.
Wildlife viewing in Mkomazi National Park is safe when conducted with experienced safari guides and in accordance with Tanzania National Parks regulations. Visitors should remain inside their safari vehicle unless instructed otherwise by their guide or park authorities. Particular care should be taken around elephants, buffalo and other large mammals, while sightings of endangered black rhinos take place only under strictly controlled conservation guidelines within the sanctuary.
