Udzungwa Mountains National Park has a tropical rainforest climate with warm temperatures year-round. Rainfall is highest during the long rains (March–May) and short rains (November–December), while the dry season from June to October offers cooler weather, excellent hiking conditions and clear forest trails.

Dry Season – June to October

The dry season offers the most comfortable conditions for hiking and exploring the forest trails.

 

  • June, July & August: Daytime temperatures average around 24°C (75°F), while mornings and evenings can be cooler due to elevation. Trails are usually drier and ideal for trekking.
  • September & October: Conditions become warmer with daytime temperatures reaching about 27°C (81°F). Waterfalls still flow strongly, and wildlife can be seen along forest paths.
Wet Season – November to May

During the wet season, the rainforest becomes especially lush, and waterfalls reach their most impressive flow.

 

  • November & December: The short rains bring vibrant greenery and excellent birdwatching opportunities.
  • January & February: A brief drier interval often occurs, offering good hiking conditions.
  • March, April & May: The long rains bring heavier showers and more humid conditions. Trails may become muddy, but the forest scenery is at its most dramatic.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park is located in southern Tanzania, approximately 360 km from Dar es Salaam and about 65 km from Mikumi National Park. The park’s main entrance, Mang’ula Gate, is easily accessible by road via the A7 highway or by scheduled domestic flights to nearby Mikumi Airstrip, followed by a scenic road transfer.

 

Travellers can drive from Dar es Salaam in approximately 6–7 hours or combine Udzungwa with Mikumi and Nyerere National Parks as part of a Southern Tanzania safari circuit. Scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar to Mikumi make fly-in safaris convenient, while private charter flights can also be arranged for greater flexibility.

Udzungwa Mountains National Park can be reached by both road and scheduled flights, making it an ideal addition to any Southern Tanzania safari itinerary.

The nearest airport to Udzungwa Mountains National Park is Mikumi Airstrip, approximately 65 km from Mang’ula Gate. Safari Air Link operates daily scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam, while other scheduled services are offered by Auric Air, Coastal Aviation, MyFly and Fly Zanzibar, depending on seasonal schedules. Travellers can also connect via Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro, with private charter flights available for greater flexibility.
