Climbers with the crew that makes the climb possible
Every Kilimanjaro climb is made possible by a dedicated team of guides, porters, and cooks whose strength and care define your journey. Around the world, it’s tradition to end the climb with a tipping ceremony, a heartfelt way to thank those who’ve worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it’s a meaningful gesture of appreciation for their professionalism and endurance, from the first morning coffee to the final push to the summit. Your contribution should reflect the service and effort invested, a fitting tribute to the team that helped you reach the Roof of Africa.
Why Tipping Truly Matters

Every Kilimanjaro climb is made possible by a dedicated crew whose hard work enables each climber to reach the summit. Many come from remote communities where tourism is a vital source of income. In the Kilimanjaro region, your tip goes beyond gratitude; it creates opportunity. It helps families, supports education, and sustains livelihoods. Even a small gesture makes a lasting impact, empowering the very people who make your journey unforgettable.
The Crew Behind Your Summit Success

The mountain crew lifting spirits with the Kilimanjaro song
Every successful Kilimanjaro climb is built on the dedication of a remarkable team working quietly behind the scenes. From seasoned guides to resilient porters, each member plays a vital role in ensuring your safety, comfort, and success on the mountain.
They set up camp before you arrive, prepare warm meals in the cold, and carry essential gear across rugged terrain, allowing you to focus on the climb itself. Their teamwork, strength, and care transform a challenging expedition into a seamless, unforgettable adventure. We honour our crew as the true heroes of every summit; their passion and professionalism make every climb exceptional.
The Team Behind Your Kilimanjaro Success
Every extraordinary summit begins with a great team. Behind every successful Kilimanjaro climb is a hardworking crew, the heartbeat of your adventure, ensuring your journey is safe, smooth, and unforgettable.
Clean, Safe, and Well-Organised Camps; Our team handles everything behind the scenes, setting up camps, keeping them spotless, and preparing warm meals high above the clouds. They maintain strict hygiene standards and protect Kilimanjaro’s natural beauty, leaving no trace behind.
The Effort Behind Every Drop of Water; At Barafu Camp (4,640m), there’s no nearby water source. Yet our porters descend nearly 700 meters to Karanga Valley, collect water, and climb back up, so that you can enjoy a hot drink or wash your hands at camp. Their strength and dedication ensure that every climber remains comfortable in even the most extreme conditions.
Meals That Keep You Going; Our mountain chefs bring fresh food, fruits, vegetables, and meats, to high altitude. They cook hearty, energising meals that refuel your body and lift your spirits after long trekking days. Even at 4,000 meters, you’ll taste the warmth of genuine Tanzanian hospitality.
Camp Comfort Done Right: From pitching your tent to cleaning up after dinner, our crew ensures every detail is perfect. Camp masters organise every site with care, and support staff work late to keep everything ready for the next day’s climb.
We celebrate our climbing crew, the true heroes who make every summit possible. Their strength, skill, and spirit turn your Kilimanjaro dream into an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.

How We Handle Tips

At Hola Africa, we value transparency, fairness, and respect for our mountain crew. To ensure every contribution reaches its rightful recipient, we’ve designed a simple and accountable tipping process.
For Small Groups (Fewer than 20 Crew Members)
Guests are encouraged to tip each crew member directly. Envelopes are available upon request. We recommend bringing small denominations, $10, $20, or $50, for easy distribution.
For Larger Groups (20 or More Crew Members)
To streamline the process after your climb, we can assist with group tipping. You’ll receive a printed list of all crew members, allowing you to note individual tip amounts, including any extras for outstanding service.
Once complete, the form and total tip amount are handed to our cashier in the presence of the crew for complete transparency. Tips are then deposited directly into each crew member’s bank account, with a printed record available for review upon request.
Transparency Through KPAP
Hola Africa is a proud member of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), dedicated to ensuring fair treatment and equitable wages for all porters. We regularly report all payments and transfers to KPAP, maintaining complete transparency through:
- Client tip forms
- Bank statements
- Transfer receipts
Requesting a Tip Report
Guests may request a detailed tip transfer report directly from KPAP or through Hola Africa. Reports are typically available within a few days. All reports are independently audited, with KPAP representatives confirming that every porter has received their full payment.
